Duct tape fixes everything. That’s what we learned growing up. Its tight seal has restored cracked Frisbees, removed lint from clothing, and held together broken window panes.

Many school districts seem to believe that sealing off the sound of students leaving campus, for medical appointments from drug counseling to abortion, will fix things as well.

These districts prevent parents from being fully informed parents. Yet according to state law, parents and guardians have a right to know when students leave campus for medical services.

To be clear: California law permits school districts to dismiss students for confidential medical services, without parental notification and without logging any absence. State law does not require this, however, and many districts choose to involve parents rather than exclude them.

That’s why Capitol Resource Institute -- California’s leading advocate for family values at local and state levels -- has established this website. Here is a place for the public, and for board members, to get educated on the issues surrounding confidential medical release.

Attempting to muffle parent-child communication is different from succeeding. Tell your district: duct tape isn’t welcome here.
